CAAP BARS FLIGHTS 10,000 FEET FROM TAAL, MAYON SURFACES

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has prohibited flights from operating 10,000 feet from the surfaces of the Taal and Mayon volcanoes, given the current unrest being recorded in those areas.

In an advisory released Monday, the CAAP has also advised against flying close to the summits, given the possibility of a sudden phreatic eruption which could be hazardous to aircraft.

The advisory was made through Notices to Airmen (NOTAM) B1940/23 for the Taal Volcano, and B1944/23 for the Mayon Volcano.

This developed as the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) raised the alert status of the Mayon Volcano to Level 2 or “increasing unrest,” given the increased rockfall from its summit lava dome.

The CAAP operates seven airports in the Bicol region — Bulan Airport, Sorsogon Airport, Daet Airport, Masbate Airport, Naga Airport, Virac Airport, and Bicol International Airport.

Meanwhile, the Taal Volcano in Batangas remains under Alert Level 1 or a low level of unrest, but there has been a visible upwelling of volcanic fluids in the main crater lake since Saturday evening. —NB, GMA Integrated News
